Xiaomi Redmi 1S: It’s All About Mi

Xiaomi Redmi 1S

Xiaomi Redmi 1S

Each time a Xiaomi Redmi 1S has gone on sale, it has sold out in seconds. Supriya Joshi uncovers the mystery behind this bestseller.

Around the world, people may be celebrating the release of the latest iPhone. However, I’m happiest when a budget smartphone releases. Xiaomi created waves in India when they released the MI 3 at Rs 13,999, a few months ago. The company has since stepped up their game and released the very affordable Redmi 1S, for Rs. 5999, as well.

Features Galore
The Redmi has an 8MP sensor, which is a first for phones at this price. And what a camera it is! The focusing was accurate, good colour reproduction and it had quite an impressive dynamic range as well. Of course, all these features muted down considerably in low light situations, but the LED flash helped illuminate the frame very well in such instances.

There are several shooting modes, including HDR and also a voice activated shutter option which shoots three seconds after you speak. You can also program the volume button to release the shutter.

It’s also quite a sturdy device, for its price. The 4.7-inch 720p HD screen was quite pleasing, with punchy colours, which made image editing a breeze.

Packing Heat
The flipside, however, is that the cellphone overheats very quickly. This did not cause any untoward errors, but it is quite annoying to handle an overheated device. The 2000mAh battery is also average and you do need to charge it at least twice a day.

Even with its niggles, Redmi 1S’ positives far outweigh its negatives. The good thing is that the Redmi isn’t trying to be something it’s not. It’s cheap, but it will get the job done brilliantly, with a few hiccups. And if you are wondering, I managed to buy it as well.

SPECIFICATIONS 8MP, Android 4.3 Jellybean, 4.7-inch display, 1.6GHz quadcore processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage (expandable up to 32GB), Rs. 5999.
WHAT WE LIKE Superb image quality, feature packed and highly affordable.
WHAT WE DISLIKE  Overheats really fast, availability dependent on luck.
