Samsung NX1: The APS-C Killer?

Smart cameras have long ignored the prosumer and high-end camera segments, but Samsung seems to be changing that with the launch of their new interchangeable lens, mirrorless camera, the NX1. On paper, the camera does its best to compete and beat high-end APS-C cameras and even going beyond with many of its features.

A 28.2MP BSI CMOS sensor makes the NX1 the highest resolution APS-C camera available today. Other stunning features include 4k video capabilities at 24fps and a 205-AF point system, and a continuous shooting speed of 15fps.

Despite being a mirrorless camera, with no pentaprism, it has still tried to copy the look of traditional DSLRs. The NX1 has a built in flash, OLED EVF and a 3-inch AMOLED touscreen tilting LCD. Interestingly, the camera has a top LCD for quick access to settings. It is also weather sealed.

The NX1 has a top LCD that let’s you quickly view and change setting.

The camera has WiFi, NFC and Bluetooth connectivity that allows for fast transfer of data, even to a near by smartphone. It can also tag location and time metadata gathered through a smartphone and can transfer images using Samsung’s Photo Beam function.

Despite the launch of the Nikon D750 and the possibly Canon EOS 7D Mark II, this camera seems to have taken photokina 2014 by storm. Priced at USD 1499 (approx. Rs. 90,000) the camera is entering a market that is already dominated by many loved cameras from every manufacturer possible. Despite this, the launch of the NX1  will definitely have pros looking seriously at ‘Smart’ cameras, or at the very least, this ‘Smart’ camera. Also announced with the NX1, was the 50–150mm f/2.8 OIS lens.
