Here are the alluring pictures submitted in the Winterbotham Darby Food for Sale category of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021:

Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP.

Street Vendor: I took this photograph in 2014 whilst working on a calendar for the Bank of Valletta. The calendar had the theme of street vendors. There are still a few of these in Malta, and it was a joy to photograph these people and their declining trade. I photographed this image in the tranquil village of Marsaxlokk in Malta. The lady still sells capers, olives, mint, parsley and other local delicacies, using an old pram for her cart. I set up the photograph with a background consisting of a battered door from an old boathouse. This way, all the elements would blend well, enhancing the nostalgic feel and mood. The lady was happy and her wonderful smile, together with that of the customer, completed the narrative. Malta is blessed with a very mild climate, helping us to light the image.

Second Winner: Aung Chan Thar, Myanmar

Inle market: People in Inle have their homes on the water and look for their livelihood there, including trading opportunities. They grow their agriculture on the water and sell the cultivated fruits at the floating market. Through this image, I wanted to emphasise their trade and livelihood. I chose the top angle to photograph this image as it portrays the various kind of trades the market has.

Third Winner: Sara Miller, United Kingdom

Road Side Cafe: It is a photograph of a roadside cafe in Nepal. I had stopped there for a short break. I noticed it had basic facilities and fabulously fresh snacks. I loved how carefully, with attention and care, she served each customer. Although she had simple equipment, she was able to make delicious food.
