Winners of the WFP Storytellers Award | Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021

Here are the alluring pictures submitted in the WFP Storytellers Award category of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021:

Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP.

First Winner: Ziney Abdulhakim Ibrahim, Iraq, Iraq

Family: I come from a small Syrian village called Hassania in the governorate of Al-Hasakah but, as of the summer of 2013, my home is the Qushtapa Refugee Camp in Iraq. I sought refuge in Iraq to escape insecurity and hunger. I left my studies and my home to begin a new life. I have a family of seven, and we all live in the same shelter. Life as a refugee is not easy, and I don’t know what the future will bring. In my younger sister’s eyes, I can see the struggles my family had to face. She was hungry, and I wanted to feed her, so I prepared something to eat with milk and olives. Next to her, my mum and our neighbour are ready to hand her more food. Despite the difficult situation, we try to preserve our customs—to eat together around the table. I always try to prepare food as we used to prepare it in Syria, but the challenging part is to find the right ingredients. The photograph is emblematic—a symbol of our strong family ties and how we are always there for each other.

Second Winner: Gabriel Bugoma, Kenya

Mother with Children: It is a photograph of a mother breastfeeding her firstborn while making breakfast for herself. Since her back was facing the sun, I used an external source of light to highlight her and the baby. At the same time, I ensure the shadow pattern at the back remains as it is.

Third Winner: Ahmed Mamend Shukr, Iraq

Camp Life: The children living in Bardarash city would line up for a bowl of noodles, which they enjoyed immensely. This kid, like man others, was getting himself a bowl of noodle.
