Winners of Spayne Lindsay on the Phone | Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021
Here are the compelling photographs submitted in the Spayne Lindsay on the Phone category of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021:
Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP.

Blackberries-FOOD-iD: In food photography, one can not showcase taste. So, I focused on the colours and textures to give each product its own identity. My work is very intuitive. On the day of the shoot, I received a package of black tissue paper. The curved and crumpled paper reminded me of a volcanic crater, and it perfectly matched with the handmade bowl created using volcanic clay by artist Jojo Corväiá. The clay gives the bowl exceptional hardness and a unique character in texture and expression. I arranged everything on my kitchen table and took the picture with my iPhone. The resulting monochrome colour, the play of daylight, and texture enhance the properties of the blackberry, but without pushing it into the background.
Second Winner: Ilian Iliev, United Kingdom

Octopus: The image was captured in Yantai, China. The background is an overused metal cooking tray, while I used the natural daylight in the kitchen. I photographed it with my iPhone and edited using the phone software. As a food photography lecturer, my classes are based on using mobile phone cameras.
Third Winner: Sowrav Das, Bangladesh

Mobile Biscuit Shop: Mohammed Sabbir’s wife works in a garment factory. There is no one at home to look after their three-year-old daughter. Since they can’t leave the child unattended, Sabbir thought that it is for the best to take her along to sell biscuits on his hand cart.
