Winners of Food at the Table | Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021

 

Here are the awe-inspiring photographs submitted in the Food at the Table category of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021:

Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP.

First Winner: Thong Nguyen, Vietnam

Breakfast at the Weekly Market: The image was captured in the northern mountainous regions of Vietnam, where mainly ethnic minorities reside. One of the best cultural features is the weekly market, usually held once a week at the commune or district centre. It is a place for cultural and culinary exchanges of many different ethnic groups. So, I photographed this moment at a pho (noodle) restaurant in Dong Van district, Ha Giang province. Pho is one of the most popular and loved dishes here. The soft golden light and the steam from the noodles created a magical, almost intimate environment.

Second Winner: Zay Yar Lin, Myanmar

Prayer Before Meals: Buddhist nuns in Sagaing, Myanmar, often pray before their meals to express their gratitude. In Buddhism, eating is more than nourishing one’s body. It is about connecting with the entire universe. It is a gift given to us through the work of all beings. Buddhists vow to be worthy of the gift, and so they work towards benefitting others. Here, food is received and eaten with gratitude and reverence.

Third Winner: Judith Balari, Italy

The Sicilian Way: I created this image during a trip to Favignana island in Sicily. The chef on the boat was serving us pasta from a huge pot. People received two portions of this absolutely delicious spaghetti with Pomodoro (tomato) sauce. When you are in Sicily, do what Sicilians do best, eating and enjoying life.
