Here are the enchanting images submitted in the Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year–People category of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021:

Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP.

The Vanishing Craft: On a grey rainy February afternoon, we found shelter, solace, and undeniable pleasure of tasting fine drinks at Cockburn’s caves. The largest cellar in Vila Nova de Gaia of Porto city contained hundreds of barrels. It was dimly lit and had a mysterious, almost cathedral-like appearance. It was a house of port wine, and it had precious containers, barrels of various sizes and shapes. To tend old barrels and assemble the new ones is considered a demanding manual job, and over the years, there has been a decline in the number of people who take it up as their vocation. Today, only nine coopers work at Cockburn’s, five of them being apprentices, the tour guide told us. So, I mused whether this craft eventually will vanish forever, or will there be a ray of hope? I took the staves and tools lit from above as a sign of hope and created this photograph.

Second Winner: Egle Berruti, Switzerland

Window with a View: This is the view from the Castle of Morcote, overlooking the vineyard and the lake covered in clouds. It was a rare occasion, as the clouds partially
enveloped the vineyard during the sunny day. I chose to add the window in the composition as it gave a sense of depth and where I was.

Third Winner: Marina Spironetti, Italy

Inside the Cube: It is a portrait of winemaker Federico Ceretto, captured in the “Cube”, one of the iconic landmarks of the Langhe region and part of the Ceretto estate. We just had a wine tasting, then Federico took us on a quick tour of the wine cellar underneath the Cube. When we reemerged, the light was just perfect. I felt I had to take a portrait quickly, but I had very little time as the sun was about to go down. I asked for a small ladder to get a better vantage point. When I took the picture, Federico was pointing out something—maybe it was one of the little towns or a vineyard—and I felt that was the right moment to release the shutter.
