Winner of the Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year–People | Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021
Here are the compelling images submitted in the Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year–People category of the Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021:
Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP.
First Winner: Victor Pugatschew, Australia
Pressing the Pinot Noir: Maybe the less glamorous task in the winemaking process is emptying the wine tank of the fermented grapes. When the tank was drained of its pinot noir juice, the worker emptied the vessel by pushing out the grape skins through its door with their feet. It was a small tank, so there was not enough room for the worker and me. So, I shot this image through the bottom door with a wide angle lens that helped to capture the compelling reflections. Since lighting was significant, we were lucky to have the tank outside on a cloudy day.
Second Winner: Manja Wachsmuth, New Zealand
Harvest: This image is a rather important memory as it was captured at Tantalus Estate on Waiheke, only a few days before New Zealand had its first lockdown in March 2020. The reality of COVID-19 had hit our shores. There was something other than just rain in the air that day. The weather played a significant part in the perfect timing of harvest in the wine industry, while the rumours of a lockdown pressurised us for harvesting. I had been documenting life at Tantalus Estate for a year, and it was crucial to include images of the harvest. On this day, the air was full of tension both from a lurking storm and from the impact of COVID-19. The viticulturist’s wife did not seem affected, and I was able to capture this calm and graphic moment where grapes were collected.
Third Winner: Gilbert Bages, Spain
What Heaven Looks Like: When I arrived in the city of Logroño, La Rioja, Spain, I saw this gigantic fountain of wine. I knew immediately that this would be my next photograph. So, I convinced my friend Richi Arambarri to jump into the fountain. After multiple attempts, I got this perfect shot.Tags: food, Spain, Food Photography, Australia, photography contest, winners, Contest, Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year, Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021, wine, vineyard, grapes, Gilbert Bages, Manja Wachsmuth, New Zealand, Victor Pugatschew, Errazuriz Wine Photographer of the Year–People
