Overall Winner | Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2021


Founded in 2011 by Caroline Kenyon and her team at The Food Awards Company, the contest celebrates the best in food photography and film today. There are 30 unique categories that cover a range of depictions of food in society. The entries are then judged by experts—photographers, magazine editors, creative directors, film directors, food retailers, and chefs. This year, the esteemed panel of jurors included David Loftus, the Chair of Judges, Nicola Galloway, Jussi Brofeldt, and Francis Hodgson, among others. The title winner receives a cash prize of 5000 GBP. Here are the winners of the 10th edition of the contest:

Overall Winner: Li Huaifeng, China

Taste: I captured the photograph in Licheng County on the National Holiday in 2016. When I visited this home, I learned that the couple’s daughter and her family had come to celebrate the gentleman’s birthday. Since the man rushed back to the fields, his family stayed back to make dumplings. I noticed the warm sunlight shining through the window and around them. It created an unexplained sense of heartwarming intimacy. To get the best composition, I seized the moment when the steam came up. I tried not to interrupt them and captured the interactions between the mother and daughter to present a heartwarming picture. I decided to employ daylight as the backlight for the characters. The diagonal lines of the stove and the rays of light lead viewers’ eyes to the centre of the image. The symmetry of the door and windows offers visual beauty. I used a wide angle lens to expand the narrow space and avoid visual clutter.

This image is also the first winner in the Food for the Family category.
