Anirban Brahma

In a lively conversation, Anirban Brahma tells Conchita Fernandes how grateful he is for the opportunities he has had in the photographic industry.

The bride seems jittery, while the groom lets out long sighs. No, these are not last-minute wedding pangs. It is their way of bracing themselves for the long line of ceremonies that will follow for the next few days. Anirban Brahma comes to the rescue at this point to provide some much needed relief. He does this by using his personality and his camera.

Learning the Trade
Anirban began photographing when he was just 19. He took it upon himself to learn the art, spending hours practising and researching over the internet. But beyond this, he talks about the significance of interaction. In his case, he learned more by networking with amateur photographers and peers. He believes that their constant efforts to learn are admirable. By practising on a day-to-day basis, amateurs and enthusiasts inspire each other.

The First Time
It did not take him long to receive his first wedding assignment. Clueless about how to proceed with the task at hand, he decided to employ his street photography skills to shoot the wedding. What followed was a warm hug and an emotional exchange of words from the groom, after he handed over the wedding photographs to him.

Hobby Versus Profession
His strongly individualistic style in wedding photography is a result of his excellent ability to mix two genres. Having said this, he is extremely cautious about this. “Street photography is strictly a hobby. The day I start charging for my street and travel work, I am going to lose some of the joy involved in shooting for it.”

Travel has become his means to unwind and relax—sometimes even vent out—after the wedding drama has come to a close. It has given him the opportunity to explore Kolkata and its intricacies, and has also taken him around the country. Good framing is just the first step. With a keen eye and a curious nature, Anirban uses his compositional sense to capture the feel and energy of the places he shoots.

“I usually avoid photographing in black and white. Instead I prefer shooting with the challenges of colour.”

Weddings are always bustling with activities. Amidst all the commotion, Anirban knows exactly where he has to be and places himself right at the centre of the action. Photograph/Anirban Brahma

The Composition of his Core Team
He then goes on to tell me a little more about his core team–his fiancée Rishika Das and his father. While Rishika assists him in photographing weddings, his dad ensures that no one runs away with his gear!

His Exhilarating Personality
After our two-hour long conversation, I could see why Anirban has done so well for himself in such a short span of time. The conversation felt like I was catching up with an old friend from school. He has a way of pouring his joy and enthusiasm into his photography and you cannot help but absorb every single bit of it.

The humble manner in which he conducts himself, both while shooting weddings and while doing his personal work, is probably why complete strangers open up to him. After all, what is not there to love in a photographer who names his dog Kuttush, right?

Gadgets and Gear

  • He prefers going light with his gear. At weddings, he only has a single camera around his neck and while travelling, he prefers to carry his Fujifilm X-E1.
  • For his travel and street photographs, he loves using a fisheye lens for the distortion that it creates. He also enjoys the compositional challenges that come with this lens.

Tips by Anirban

  • It is crucial for any photographer to understand and learn the limitations of their camera. It is only then that you will be able to compose a good image.
  • If you practise candid photography, ask yourself if you are active enough. Are you quick on your feet and even faster while composing photographs?
