Despite the fact that his first camera is a Canon EOS 5D Mark II, there is a young photographer who believes that equipment does not matter. Meet 21-year old Gaurav Sawn, who won the camera as first prize in Canon’s recently conducted ‘Streets of Mumbai’competition. It is interesting that Gaurav started shooting only a year ago and did not own a camera until this award happened.
He shot the winning image when he was taking a break from a shoot and was standing on the balcony of a building. “I saw the patch of water that looked like a skull and just started shooting with a rented Nikon D70s,” says Gaurav. “Little did I know it would get me my first ever camera.
A fresh graduate, Gaurav believes that a metropolis like Mumbai is filled with photo opportunities. “All you need to do is look around,” he says. “The vibrancy of street life will ensure that the photographs follow.”
