Why This is My Best Shot
Over the past three years, I have shot a lot of street, travel and commercial images. A majority of my work is rather different from this particular image. However, this silhouette remains special to me because this was my first image that was chosen for an exhibition. Its simplicity and abstract quality make this my favourite photograph.

Where and When I Shot This Image
I shot this photograph a little more than two years ago, in Kumortuli, a locality for potters and artisans in Kolkata.

How I Achieved It
I had gone to this locality to shoot the idols that had been created by the artisans there. After the shoot, I was just waiting for a few friends, when I saw these pigeons creating a beautiful formation over the metal framework. Most people only shoot idols in this area, and I thought that an abstract image would be a unique interpretation of the place. Once I had shot the image, all I needed to do was to convert it to black and white and increase the contrast slightly. The effect I got, through the strong backlight, was stark and perfect.

The Gear I Used to Get This Shot
I used a Nikon D200 with a basic Nikkor 18–70mm kit lens.
