10 Songs About Photography

There are songs about love, songs about life, songs about breakups, songs about anacondas and buns… and, there are also songs about photography. Check out these songs, each a unique take on the art of making images.

10. Kodachrome – Paul Simon

One half of the legendary Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon featured the song Kodachrome in his 1973 album There Goes Rhymin’ Simon. The song itself is named after the 35mm film from Kodak, and features lyrics such as,

Kodachrome,
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world’s a sunny day
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take a photograph
So mama don’t take my Kodachrome away

The song was subsequently used by Kodak to sell film in the 1990s.

9. Kevin Carter – Manic Street Preachers

The Welsh alternative rock band performed this song in their 1996 album called Everything Must Go. The song was written for Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist Kevin Carter, who committed suicide at the age of 33, struggling with his professional vs moral responsibilities. The arrangement and the video of the song subtly put forth the inner turmoil Carter must have felt before he passed away.

8.  Paparazzi – Lady Gaga

What’s worse than being followed around with people trying to take a photo of you? We wouldn’t know, but the reigning goddess of pop, Lady Gaga sure does. In her song Paparazzi, she belts out the ways in which paparazzos can truly make or break the careers of the Hollywood supremos.

7. Click, Click, Click, Click – Bishop Allen

More than the song itself, the video shows you how a film is developed into a photo. And with lyrics like ‘Take another picture with your click, click, click, click camera,’ you’re sure to be humming this song all day long.

6. Flashbulb Eyes – Arcade Fire

What if the camera really do take your soul? Listen to the song to find out.

5. Photograph – Nickelback

Noted for being the least-liked musical act, Nickelback’s Photograph is a song about memories. And what better way to remember them, than through photos?

4. Distant Camera – Niel Young

Also about memories, Distant Camera features such lyrics as,

Life is changing everywhere I go,
New things and old both disappear.
If life is a photograph,
Fading in the mirror…

3. Hey Ya! – Outkast

Admittedly, this song has nothing to do with photography. But, come on. Shake it like a Polaroid picture!

2. #SELFIE – Chainsmokers

Frivolous, narcissistic and grating, this song signifies a sub-culture of photography itself. Selfies.

1. Khadi Raho, Baith Jao – Deewana Mujhsa Nahi

We couldn’t let you go without saving the best for last, could we? Here’s Aamir Khan as a photographer, showing you exactly what not to do when asking for a model to pose for your photographs. But, for trying so hard to pass off as a photographer, we give this song the top spot in this list.
