Quote of the Week by William Albert Allard

“I think the best pictures are often on the edges of any situation. I don’t find photographing the situation nearly as interesting as photographing the edges.” —William Albert Allard (1937)

American documentary photographer, William Albert Allard, is one of the few photographers of his generation whose entire professional body of work is in colour. In 1964, he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a double major in Journalism and Photography. He was offered an internship by Robert Gilka, then Director of Photography at National Geographic. His photographs of the Amish of Pennsylvania got him a full-time position at the magazine. After resigning from his post in 1967, Allard continued to contribute to National Geographic and eventually, to Magnum Photos.
