Quote of the Week by Philippe Halsman

“Herein lies the main objective of portraiture and also its main difficulty. The photographer probes for the innermost. The lens sees only the surface.” —Philippe Halsman  (1906-1979)

Born in Riga, Latvia, Philippe Halsman was a celebrated American portrait photographer. A reputed name in the fashion work, he worked in France and the USA, and produced 101 covers for LIFE magazine. Halsman was also a master painter, creating high-quality silver gelatin prints—which he never numbered—in a darkroom at home. His philosophy of ‘jumpology’, where he asked celebrities to jump for his camera in a bit to capture their most authentic selves, is well-known and widely replicated.
