Debdatta Chakraborty Wins Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year 2022
Pink Lady Food Photographer Year recently concluded its contest. Indian photographer Debdatta Chakraborty was named the overall winner for an image titled Kebabiyana, which was taken in Srinagar, Kashmir. The image by Chakraborty, who wins 5000 GBP (approx. Rs. 4,80,862), triumphed above thousands of entries from across the globe. The photograph was shot at Khayyam Chowk, an ordinary street by day that transforms into a buzzing food hub at night, as vendors fire up charcoal ovens and fill the air with the smoky aroma of grilled delights such as wazwan kebabs, the popular Kashmiri street food.
“In today’s world, more than ever, we feel the need for comfort, for love,” says awards Founder and Director, Caroline Kenyon. “There is so much to reassure us here – the beautifully captured billowing embrace of the smoke, the golden light, the subject’s expression as he prepares the food for sharing. Sparks fly from the skewers, whose roasting we can almost smell. We imagine the warm, delicious aroma. This image, gentle but powerful, nourishes our soul,” she adds.
Three other Indian photographers also achieved success in the competition. Indigo Lamour was awarded Second Place in the Young (11 – 14) category for her image capturing offerings of food and prayer at the festival of Chhath Puja in Delhi, and Johncie Correia was awarded Third Place in the On the Phone category for a rustic shot of Goan rice cakes on wood fire, while Dheeraj Paul was Highly Commended in the Food for the Family category with an image of Muslim devotees breaking fast during Ramadan.
This year’s global judging panel was tasked with assessing the thousands of entries submitted from over 60 countries across the world, was chaired by legendary food photographer, David Loftus, and included Fiona Shields, Head of Photography, Guardian News & Media, Krishna Madhavan Pillai, Chief Editor, Better Photography, NA Risong, Art director and curator of Inter Art Center Gallery, Beijing, Nik Sharma, Cookbook author, Photographer, Columnist, Tasneem Alsultan, Investigative and National Geographic Photographer and Rein Skullerud, Head of Photo Unit, World Food Programme.
