Children living with HIV are in urgent need of support from state schemes meant for poor and marginalised. Left alone with this disease, most of them are underweight and out of school. ActionAid India, an NGO, commissioned a photo documentation, to promote AIDS awareness and present the testimonies of these children in front of the state officials. For me, these photographs are a means to connect these children to the rest of the world. To protect them from any misdirected stigma, I deliberately framed the portraits in such a way that their identity is not fully revealed.

Working Towards an HIV-related Photo Story

  • Identify NGOs that work with HIV patients and approach them. Not only will you get easier access to people, you may get a chance to form lasting associations that can help you in the future.
  • It is a good practice to previsualise your frames before you start photographing.
  • You should be able to tell a story without revealing the identity of the affected by using techniques like shallow DOF, silhouettes and so on.
  • While B&W can give your photographs a gritty look, colours can make them look more cheerful and full of hope.
