The First Photojournalist was a Romanian
This story was originally published in May 2014.
Carol Popp de Szathmáry (1812–1887), a Romanian lithographer and photographer, was considered to be the very first photojournalist. He was well-known for his gritty photographs of the Crimean War between Russia and Turkey (1853–56). He gained reputation around the European continent after his pictures were published in major dailies and went on to be exhibited in the biggest art galleries. They were later copied in limited numbers and distributed globally.
