It seems like an impossible task to photograph my family and my home. How can I change this?
Answer by: Sathish Kumar, Photographer
I have been making photographs of my family and my home, since I was 14-years-old. For me, photographing the time I spend with my family in Chennai, is important. Photographs are a physical form of memories and experiences I have had. It’s about recording my everyday existence, of all encounters and journeys to create an expression of myself, of my life, and of the world around me.
This reminds me of the time when I faced one of my biggest difficulties. I had to photograph a phase of my father’s life when he was losing his battle to cancer. It was the most crucial time for my family. However, I felt it was important to record it because this transition is also a part of the cycle of human existence. The most essential aspect was to show my father with utmost dignity. Hence, I also decided to show only a few of those pictures.
The most important thing to keep in mind is to refrain from calling this your ‘project’ because it can make one feel like they are working on an assignment. I would advise you to shoot not as a photographer, but as a person, a member of the family. It is not important that one makes a great photo, but to be able to share the experiences that one often goes through in their life. You will look at these images, and in a way, relive the moments once again. Just photograph what you really love, with complete honesty. Images freeze time, and you are spending your energy on it. One should respect the flow of time, and life will show the way.Tags:
