This story was originally published in December 2011.

Barack Obama, the President of USA, is the first and only US President to have a digital image as an official portrait. The image was taken by Pete Souza, the official White House photographer, using a Canon 5D Mark II on 13 January 2009. In a tradition that started with Gilbert Stuart’s portrait of the first president of USA, George Washington, each consecutive President has had an oil painting made for their official portraits. Obama is the only President to have changed this age-old tradition.
