You should always have two backups of all your digital photographs. It is worthwhile to save the original RAW/JPEG file from the camera, as well as the final image file that you have edited in a post-processing software.
There are numerous  software that can help  you manage and sort  your digital files. It is best  if you save the original version of your images on your computer, and you can store a copy on an external hard drive. DVDs can be also be effective backup media too, but ensure that you store your DVDs in a clean and dry environment. Also, do ensure that you maintain a good reference journal or log that will help you maintain and retrieve your backup files when you need them.
