The Competition: The Ian Parry Scholarship is inviting entries from photographers or full-time photography students under the age of 24. Those interested in applying for the scholarship need to send in their portfolio along with a brief synopsis of a project they would like to undertake.

The winner stands to win £3,500 towards their chosen assignment. £500 goes to those awarded ‘Highly Commended’ and ‘Commended’. World Press photo adds the winner to their the final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. The winner also gets added to the online Emerging Talent group of Getty Reportage. The application form will be released soon.

The scholarship is named after Ian Parry, a 24-year-old photojournalist who passed away in 1989, while on assignment for The Sunday Times. He was covering Nicolae Ceausescu’s downfall in Romania. At such a young age, he was hailed as talented by many photo editors. Aidan Sullivan, the then photo editor of The Sunday Times founded the scholarship in memory of Ian.
