CEIF 2016 Product Spotlight—Sony Alpha 7R II

Sony Alpha 7R II

The digital mirrorless interchangeable lens camera features the world’s first back-illuminated Full Frame Exmor R CMOS sensor, which enables users to capture high resolution images of 42.4MP at up to ISO 1,02,400.

The Alpha 7R II, featuring 399 Phase Detection AF points and 25 Contrast Points, offers 40 percent faster autofocus response, compared to its predecessor the Alpha 7R. Equipped with 5-axis image stabilisation, the shutter reduces vibration by 50 percent and boasts a lifespan of 5,00,000 shots. In addition, the Alpha 7R II features a newly refined XGA OLED Tru-Finder with 0.78x viewfinder magnification.

The camera can record 4K video in multiple formats, including Super 35mm. Other features that support professional video workflow include Picture Profile, S-Log2 Gamma and S-Gamut, 120fps high frame rate movie shooting in HD (720p).

Other key features include gapless on-chip lens design, an anti-reflective coating on the surface of the sensor’s glass, BIONZ X image processing engine, silent shooting mode for capturing images without sensor vibration, WiFi and NFC connectivity.

Better Photography’s Chief Editor, K Madhavan Pillai, recently reviewed the camera and gave it an overall rating of 87%. This is what he had to say about it. “In recent years, few photography companies have been as innovative as Sony, and the 7R II maintains this reputation. The camera is meant for a certain type of user though. It is not particularly given to street, action, or quick low light photography. In that case, you would be better served with one of the DSLRs. Yet, as an upgrade from the 7R, the 7R II holds its own. It is priced at Rs. 2,39,990, and very well-suited for photographers who practice fine art, studio, still life, portraiture, landscapes or fashion. For those who need the resolution, the question to ask next is if you need pro 4K video. If you do, it really does not get better than the Sony Alpha 7R II.”
